You have probably heard that the Allen Brothers founded Houston! Well…Yes but maybe No! Some say that Charlotte M. Allen, wife of Augustus Chapman Allen, should have gotten credit as one of Houston’s founders!
“In fact, you would be living in Charlottesville if Sam Houston had gotten his way. Not Charlottesville. VA but Charlottesville, TX,” according to Joe Holley’s great article in the Houston Chronicle 10/31/15. Ms. Charlotte apparently was the one with the money used to buy the original 6,600 acres that is now the City of Houston!
The Allen Brother left Houston a couple of years, but Ms. Charlotte stayed and kept the town going with her knowledge and generosity! Amazingly she got little or no credit for her big contribution. This is a great little known story! Check it out!
